Liability insurance is one of the most important types of coverage you can carry. Whether it's on your auto policy, your homeowners policy, or a standalone umbrella policy, liability coverage protects you financially when you're found responsible for causing injury to someone else or damaging their property.
What Does Liability Insurance Cover?
At its core, liability insurance pays for two things: bodily injury and property damage that you cause to others. If you rear-end someone at a stoplight, your auto liability coverage pays for their medical bills and car repairs. If someone slips on your icy driveway and breaks their wrist, your homeowners liability coverage handles their medical costs and any legal claims.
Liability coverage also pays for your legal defense if you're sued. Attorney fees, court costs, and settlements can add up fast, and liability insurance covers those expenses up to your policy limits.
How Much Liability Coverage Do You Need?
Most states require minimum liability coverage on your auto policy, but those minimums are dangerously low. Connecticut, for example, requires just 25/50/25, meaning $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. A single serious accident can easily exceed those numbers.
We recommend carrying at least 100/300/100 on your auto policy, and ideally 250/500/250 or higher if you have assets to protect. For homeowners, most policies start at $100,000 in liability, but $300,000 or $500,000 is a much safer floor.
When Should You Add an Umbrella Policy?
If your total assets, including your home equity, savings, and investments, exceed your liability limits, you should strongly consider an umbrella policy. Umbrella policies provide an additional $1 million or more in liability protection and are surprisingly affordable, often costing just $200 to $400 per year for the first million.
Think of liability insurance as the foundation of your financial protection. Without enough of it, a single bad day could put everything you've built at risk.
